The Big Kahuna wasn’t always so gentle. The very first guardian the island dreamed up was fierce — all volcano fire, sharp teeth, and a stormy scowl. But that’s not the kind of hero Waves needed. So the sea went to work on him: it filed down the teeth, rounded the smile, and traded the fury for a warm heart.

What rose from the tide was the big, friendly protector the Krewe knows today — proof that the strongest guardian is the one who keeps everyone calm. Now he stands watch over the island, holding the volcano’s fire and the ocean’s water in perfect balance. A true master of the elements, and the very first of the Waves Krewe.

He’s No. 1 — the first character of the whole Waves universe.
His staff is carved like a curling wave and topped with a glowing aqua crystal.
He keeps fire and water in balance — lava on one side, ocean on the other.
He carries a pearl charm that ties his story to Pearl’s.

Pearl began as a gift. Long ago, a gentle face wearing a string of pearls watched over the property — and the ocean loved her so much it decided to bring her to life. Deep in the reef, inside a shell that glowed like morning light, the sea placed its kindest treasure.

Pearl rose with a calm, glowing heart, and she’s been sharing it ever since. She’s the calm at the center of the Krewe — the one who turns worried days into wonder. Wherever Pearl goes, the water goes quiet and everything feels a little more like magic.

She was born inside a softly glowing oyster shell.
Her name is the Krewe’s shared good-luck charm — even the Big Kahuna carries a pearl for her.
She wears a scallop-shell bow and a dress that fades from blush pink to seafoam.

The Kap’n started as a real friend of the property — a seagull who showed up every morning like he owned the place. The Krewe gave him a captain’s cap, a smart little jacket, and the most important job on the island: to greet every single guest who arrives at Waves.

Steady, kind, and always first to the shore, the Kap’n runs his sunrise patrol without fail. He’s the friendly face at the dock — the one who makes you feel like family the moment you arrive.

He’s based on a real seagull who calls the property home.
He wears the Waves “W” crest on his jacket and an anchor on his cap.
First to greet you, last to wave goodbye.
His pod icon is a ship’s helm — he’s the one at the wheel.

The Wave Rider is the youngest of the Krewe and the one who keeps the fun rolling. While the others keep watch, she grew up chasing the horizon — learning every wave the only way that counts: by riding it.

Board under her arm and a lucky shell in her hair, she’s fearless, joyful, and always up for the next adventure. She’s living proof that courage and fun ride the very same wave.

Shelldon is the newest member of the Krewe — and the first friend Pearl ever made at the little tide pool at the quiet end of the shore. He’s a small hermit crab with a small, plain, slightly crooked shell, and for the longest time he believed he needed a better one before he could come out and say hello. Pearl taught him the words the whole Krewe lives by: you already belong — just as you are.

The whole story — the “empty” tide pool that wasn’t, the almost-hellos, and the morning he finally came out — is told in the very first Waves storybook, Pearl and the Empty Tide Pool.

He notices things — tiny, hidden, wonder-full things everyone else swims past.
He carries a bright turquoise treasure-pail for the wonders he finds.
His woven cone shell is his forever home — small, plain, a little crooked, and exactly right.

When Fearless Finn was very small — small enough to tuck into the crook of a wing — the tide brought him right to the Kap’n’s boots. From that day on, he was the Kap’n’s boy: not kept like a treasure, but chosen, and loved like a son. Their story doesn’t begin with where Finn came from. It begins the day they became family.

The Kap’n taught him the tides, the buddy system and how to read the Gulf, and Finn grew into the bravest little swimmer on the shore — confident and calm, never reckless. In The Kap’n and the Chosen Crew he gets to be captain for a day, and learns what every good captain knows.

Fun Facts

He’s a shark — and the friendliest one in the whole Gulf. Brave and strong can mean safe and kind.
Bubbles was the one who first called him Fearless Finn, because Finn reached his fin out first.
In Book Four he borrows the Kap’n’s white captain’s cap — and hands it back at the end of the day: “It fits you better, Dad.”
He’s No. 06 in the Waves Collection.

Dido began as a small palm on the path at Eden — and Big Kahuna was there. Everyone looked up at the tall palms. Nobody looked down. Nobody except Big Kahuna, who knelt in the sand beside her and stayed, through wind and heat and the hardest part of growing. She was already herself, only small: her palm-frond crown, her golden eyes and her gold beaded necklace were hers from the very start.

As she grew, soft lavender and rose marks bloomed on her — never painted on, never earned, just there to be noticed. Now she stands at the head of the path, welcoming everyone onto Perdido Key. And when someone very small comes down the path, she bends all the way down to say hello.

In Book Two she’s called the Little Palm — her name isn’t revealed until the very last page.
Her living palm-frond crown is topped with tropical flowers and a spiral seashell.
She has a soft heart on her forehead and two stripes on each cheek.
She’s No. 07 in the Waves Collection.

Bubbles is a round little pufferfish from the tide pools below the Eden boardwalk. Whenever a feeling grew too big — a loud storm, a fast wave, an embarrassing moment — he would puff up and drift away, sure that meant something was wrong with him.

Then, one glowing Gulf sunset, the tide rose fast and some tiny sea-hatchlings were cut off from home. Bubbles puffed up — and remembered what Wave Rider once told him: a wave doesn’t win by rushing; it finds its rhythm. He took one slow breath in, blew one long bubble out, and found the calm between the waves. He was still scared. He went anyway.

He wears his orange-and-white swim ring everywhere, so he can hand it to a friend the moment they need it.
His pink bubble wand is always with him.
Wave Rider is his best friend: she gives him courage, and he gives her calm.

His breath tool works for anyone: notice the big feeling, take one slow breath in, blow one long bubble out, and let it float.
